    Description

Up for auction is a volume with a fascinating Scot American Virginia historical provenance. The title :
The Letters Of Junius Complete In One Volume A New Edition with Copious Index
    . London 1788.
" The Letters of Junius (or Junius: Stat nominis umbra) is a collection of private and open letters critical of the government of King George III from an anonymous polemicist (Junius) claimed by some to be Philip Francis (although Junius' real identity has never been verified), as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The collection was published in two volumes in 1772 by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the owner and editor of a London newspaper, the Public Advertiser."
I believe this volume belonged to
John Orr a signer of the Revolutionary Resolutions drawn by Richard Henry Lee in protest against the Stamp Act in 1766
. It would seem appropriate Orr would have a copy of the Letters of Junius considering his active opposition to the Stamp Act.
Inside the front cover board is the bookplate of
Alexander Orr of Waterside I assume his father Rev. Alexander Orr.
The bookplate is affixed to the pastedown. Written directly on the bookplate is
    John D. Orr Virginia
and on the title page on the top right is a shorted form
    J D. Orr.
    In addition is the name
    Geo ( George)  Wisc ?
Or at least that is my interpretation of this signature written on 1st end paper.
Backround  regarding the Orr family of Scotland and America
“ The Dalrymples of Waterside were of the family and bear the arms of Stair ; the Earle of Stair, the present head of which house, very kindly gave the writer the information necessary for this sketch. John Orr, the younger son of Rev. Alexander Orr and Lady Waterside, came to Virginia in about 1750, and married Susannah Monroe Grayson, an aunt of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States. John Orr was a signer of the Revolutionary Resolutions drawn by Richard Henry Lee in protest against the Stamp Act in 1766. “
