Most pages of the book (pages 10 to 223) have a photographic color plate on the left page and a description (in Japanese) on the right page. Pages 224 to 253 include explanatory text relating to the plates, and 5 pages illustrating makers’ marks.
I asked a Japanese friend to tell me about the book and here is what she said: “This is a book published by Japan’s foremost tea ceremony authority for its club members. Omote-Sen is the name of the family which has been one of the two major styles of the tea ceremony since the 17th century. (The other house is called Ura-Sen). The book is filled with beautiful illustrations of Omote-Sen ceremonial stuff. The name of the book is Do-mon and the name of the tea ceremony club is Do-mon Kai. The club was formed a few years before the WW2, and this book was published in 1976 to commemorate the restart of the club.” I do not read Japanese, so I am assuming she is correct!
From the estate of Anabel Wakako Matsuhara (aka Anabel Wakako Sakamoto) of San Francisco, b. 1906 d. 2008 at the age of 101. Her name, Anabel Wakako Sakamoto, and address are on the rear free endpaper.
Condition: NEAR FINE book, just a bit of rubbing to the covers, previous owner's name/address as mentioned above, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked; in a GOOD slipcase that is sunned at the spine and spine margins, has some bumping to the spine ends and corner tips, but is still sturdy and doing its job well. All the photographic plates are gorgeous.
