From the authors: "Much history has been made since the first Indians set foot on our small piece of the Earth. The Frenchmen dreaming of silver, the farmers hoping for fertile land, the miners looking for lead and the family looking for a better place to lvie all have had a part in the history of Madison County, Missouri. While working on this book it has become evident to us how much history we do have and how much needs to be done in the years ahead to preserve it. It is with much sorrow that we may never be able to record our earlier history because of the "old timers" that have already gone on. It has also been realized how much we are limited in presenting this history because of space. We were forced to make choices and regrettably had to omit many interesting articles and photographs."
