This is the 1st Impression of the 1st Edition of this book.
Hardbound in Very Good condition, 409 pages includes a double FRONTISPIECE, CONTENTS, LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS (21 full page) and APPENDIX A through G, measures nearly 5 ¾” x 8 ¼”, no dust jacket, none issued.
The boards are covered in turquoise cloth with gilt titles and filigree on the front board and spine; rear board plain. The surfaces and page edges are clean, free of soil or fading, straight with a very slight bump to the upper rear leading edge. Some crushing is noted to the lower spine, a couple creases, but no tears, no worn through areas at the edges or points and no fabric loss of any kind. Overall, a very pleasing copy. Originally issued also in red boards and in cream boards, this turquoise binding was the one chosen for the presentation of the 2014 quality reprint by the University of Hawaii. T
he book has been fitted with a Dust Jacket of clear acid-free Mylar to help protect it in the future.
The interior reveals clean, firmly bound contents with hinges completely intact, no loose or misaligned pages, actually retaining a bit of its original crispness. Modest age toning is noted consistent to the date of publication, but no foxing. The fly page displays a rubber stamp of the Bishop’s University Library in Lennoxville, Quebec, Ca. Further, there is an almost unnoticeable indication of a label or pocket having been removed from the inner rear board. There are no previous owner names, notations, marks, creases or tears.
Well illustrated with 21 full page plates, some of which are not part of the standard fair plus significant Genealogy charts pertaining to herself and members of the monarchy. HAWAII’S STORY by HAWAII’S QUEEN is Queen Liliuokalani’s autobiography, her own story of her life beginning with her earliest memories, her growing up years, marriage to John Dominis, the family’s tour of Europe and her return to Hawaii in a state of political upheaval.
Queen Liliuokalani reigned for two years prior to her arrest for treason. Although her sentence was never carried out, she was detained for eight months after which Washington Place became her official place of residence. That address thereafter became the residence of Hawaii’s 1st and only president and subsequent Governors.
Reprinted many times over the years, in both hard cover and as a mass market paperback, HAWAII’S STORY by HAWAII’S QUEEN is truly one of Hawaii’s classics. In exceptional condition, this 1st edition would be a prize Hawaiiana collection piece.
