Chicago: Afro-American Publishing Company, [circa 1965]. First edition of this broadside, issued as part of the series "Negroes in Our History: Afro-Am Portfolio No. 1." The broadside measures 11 by 14 inches. It prints text about the subject by Russell Adams, and is illustrated by noted African-American artist, Eugene Winslow, who
was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, and co-founded The Afro-American Publishing Company. Very good condition.
Ex-library, with few small ink marks on blank verso, few staple marks and pin-holes, else crisp and clean.
Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was a free African-American almanac author, surveyor, landowner and farmer who had knowledge of mathematics and natural history. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, to a free African-American woman and a former slave, Banneker had little or no formal education and was largely self-taught.
