ST NICHOLASAN
ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
1928 Part One, 1928 Part Two
THE CENTURY CO., NEW YORK
Copyright, 1928 by The Century, Co.
This is a two volume, hard cover set, in good condition, published and bound by The Century Co for the year of 1928. Each volume contains a CONTENTS list, DEPARTMENTS list and FRONTISPIECE Lists, both combined have approximately 1040 pages, the volumes measure 8 ½” x 11”.
The boards are covered in maroon cloth with rather extravagant graphic designs blind stamped in black and gold on the spines and covers. The covers note that the volume are 1928 Part One and 1928 Part Two. They are in good condition particularly with respect to their large size. The surfaces are clean with darkening noted to both spines, however both remain legible. The boards display some wear and fading, Part Two has a faint circular area on the upper cover next to the spine. They are straight with toeing in of the corners. Edge wear is moderate noted at the ends of the spines with some splits and fraying but no fabric loss, other edges only lightly worn with a few light bumps. Both volumes have been fitted with Archival Quality clear Mylar Dust Jackets to help protect them in the future.
The interiors reveal clean solid contents, unmarked with no loose pages. The end papers covering the hinges have a few limited cracks that were repaired with Acid Free Mending Tissue. Modest age toning is noted with a bend to the upper free corner of a number of pages, Part One. I found one page that had a conventional tape repair and aa occasional minor crease or discrepancy. No previous owner indications are noted.
The ST. NICHOLAS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE a part of the Century Co., New York was issued as monthly soft cover magazines that included publications by newer, aspiring authors and included a copious number of illustrations; photos, sketch and line drawings. Authors such as James Norman Hall, A. Grove Day and Robert Dean Frisbie’s (FISHING WITH KING-OF-THE-SKY, one of the chapters of the BOOK OF PUKA-PUKA) first appeared in these 1928 ST. NICHOLAS magazines. The art work of Mahlon Blaine presented in volume Two was also featured in Frisbie’s BOOK OF PUKA-PUKA.
ST. NICHOLAS MAGAZINE, founded in the 1870s by Scribner's may have originally been targeted at “Boys and Girls” although the reading level and subject interest of the 20th century magazines seems to address a much broader audience. Many writers got their start selling their short stories and subsequently went on to publish books, becoming well know authors.
Miscellaneous volumes of ST. NICHOLAS are not difficult to locate but it is rare to come upon both 1928 Volumes in solid collectible condition. Nearly 100 years of age, containing some of Frisbie’s and Hall’s earliest work, they would be a wonderful addition to an antiquarian library. Further, the diverse selection of subjects, advertisements and sprinkling of classified ads all featuring era typical illustrations, make this a nostalgic set with something to offer everyone.
