The Man in the Moone, or a discourse of a voyage thither
is considered to be the first work of science fiction in English. Written by Francis Godwin, bishop of Hereford, the story was first published posthumously, under an assumed name, in 1638.
Godwin’s hero, Domingo Gonsales, finds his way to the moon in a flying machine pulled by ‘gansas’ (wild swans). His journey is illustrated on the title page, with an additional drawing on page 28
bound in red Morocco leather with elaborate gilt tooled lettering
PAINE was of course head of NASA in 1969 for the Apollo moon landing
i'm assuming that the this book being the 1st of the very limited edition of 150
was gifted to him by the publishers
i acquired a number of items from the Paine estate at Los Angeles auction Abell
