Hardbound in very good condition, 251 pages include a FRONTISPIECE, detailed CONTENTS, LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS (over 40 plates many full page), and a multi-page ADDENDA, no dust jacket, likely none issued.
The boards are covered in navy silk with gilt
page tops, an uncut vertical edge, gilt printing on the spine and blind stamped trim to the cover.  They are clean and straight, with light edge wear primarily at the ends of the spine and the points with modest toeing in of the corners.  The book has been fitted with an Archivally stable clear Mylar Dust Jacket to help protect it in the future.
The contents are clean, firmly bound with hinges well intact, no loose or misaligned pages, the vertical page edges were neatly opened.  There is age toning consistent with the date of publication but no foxing.  A light bump is noted to a section of pages, upper free corner.  There are two ownership stamps, first one on the fly page, the second on the copyright page, both indicating the book to have been property of the Tozzer Library, Peabody Museum.  There are no pockets, etc. indicating that the book had ever been in “check-out” circulation.   The book's Theatre Handbill is present and free of tears.  Additionally, a previous owner has pasted in what appears to be an Original Vaccination Certificate.
Written in dated journal entry form Mr. Briggs produced perhaps the most simple and insightful record of day to day life as seen by a Hawaii medical practitioner of the 1880s.  Not a typical tour of the Island, the Author details his daily experiences and observations of Honolulu and the Island from a medical viewpoint.  Extensive descriptions are given pertaining to the demands and challenges presented him in disease control and health maintenance particularly in light of an impending Small Pox epidemic.
Included are many photos and illustrations plus a four page fold-out handbill for the Royal Hawaiian Theatre featuring BABES IN THE WOOD plus Songs in the Burlesque.
Rare and unique, EXPERIENCES OF A MEDICAL STUDENT IN HONOLULU AND ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU may be the only publication true to its purpose of documenting the medical conditions of this era.
Well acquainted with members of the Royal Family, the Author documents by his own narrative and the presentation of correspondence by others in the community, the current goings on including a visit by Queen Liliuokalani to Boston in 1896.  Mr. Briggs’ medical venue and desire to record subjects of social interest would make this book a unique additional a either a Medical or Hawaiiana collection.
